Who knew that small things could cause such big problems? We all know to be afraid of large creatures such as wolves, bears, and cougars, but did you know that pests beat all of these wilderness predators out in problems caused each year? For instance, you don’t see bears destroying homes to the tune of 5 billion dollars a year as termites do. Wolves aren’t building homes on our properties and threatening us with harm every day as bees and wasps do. And can you imagine a cougar invading an attic during the wintertime to stay warm as rats do? Although pests are small, they can cause a plethora of problems for homeowners each year. Does your home have the protection it needs to keep these tiny threats at bay?
The problems pests cause can be separated into three major categories. They are either an annoyance, a destructive threat to our homes and/or possessions, or a direct threat to people and their health and wellbeing. To explain these differences, let us show you and compare three common household pests that can be found here in Richmond.
Ants: Ants come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but they all have one thing in common. They are annoying. To find food, they invade homes and scavenge anything they can get their tiny limbs on. This in and of itself can be extremely annoying.
Termites: Termites fit into the category of a destructive pest. When they invade homes they do so into its wood, destroying it from the inside out-- eventually causing damage that can cost homeowners thousands of dollars to repair.
Black Widow Spiders: These spiders are known for how dangerous they are. Just one bite and you could be on your way to the hospital. The good news is that their bites are rarely fatal. The bad news is that they can cause several other serious health problems and a ridiculous amount of pain.
Although all pests are different and drawn into homes by different factors, they all need a few things to invade.

Sealing your home's foundation using a caulking gun.
Reducing clutter inside and around your home.
Making sure your window and door screens are in good-working order.
Cleaning regularly in places you wouldn’t normally clean such as under refrigerators and stoves.
Reducing moisture inside and outside your home by fixing leaks, installing dehumidifiers, and eliminating standing pools of water.
